Wheelchair Basketball Quaranteam Movement Gains Momentum and Champions True Sport
(Ottawa, ON - August 11, 2020) - Wheelchair Basketball Canada’s (WBC) Quaranteam Run, Walk, Wheel and Skate fundraiser, set for August 21-23, 2020, has been declared an official True Sport event! The announcement comes after the Quaranteam Movement has gained serious momentum and support from the community.
Thus far, supporters have pledged to travel more than 1,600 km, which means WBC is more than halfway towards reaching its goal of moving 2,020 km in support of Canada’s wheelchair basketball teams! Thank you for joining us on this journey.
“It’s so uplifting to see the community rally behind Team Canada, especially in these challenging times,” said Canadian Women’s National Team athlete Tara Llanes. “I’m absolutely grateful for that support and that willingness to give back to the sport that we all love. Thank you to everyone who has joined Team Canada on this journey as we continue our pursuit of excellence on the road to Tokyo.”
Over the past 25 years, WBC has witnessed the incredible power of wheelchair basketball to bring people together, positively impact people’s lives, and transform perceptions about ability. Fuelled by that knowledge and its commitment to inclusion, WBC is a firm believer in the True Sport Principles and a champion of values-based sport.
“Wheelchair basketball showed me my potential as an athlete at a time when I couldn’t see it for myself,” said three-time Paralympic gold medallist Patrick Anderson. “It ignited a passion that pushed me to be the best I could be on and off the court. I’m excited to share that passion for the game and get moving with everyone on the Quaranteam. Set a goal, have fun and go for it! You never know how far you might go.”
In the spirit of getting active and having fun as a collective community, WBC encourages all participants to bring the True Sport Principles to life along their Quaranteam journey. As you log those kilometres, share your good sport stories that exemplify True Sport on social media using #TrueSportMoments for the chance to win a True Sport prize pack!
“The Quaranteam Run, Walk, Wheel and Skate fundraiser exemplifies so many of the True Sport Principles so it is great to see it officially declared a True Sport event,” said Karri Dawson, Senior Director, Quality Sport at the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES). “WBC continues to do an excellent job of recognizing and promoting the positive benefits of a True Sport experience. I encourage you to join the CCES True Sport team as we join in this fundraiser to have fun, stay healthy and give back to our Canadian Wheelchair Basketball teams.”
Haven’t signed up for the Quaranteam yet? It’s not too late to join in on the fun! Registration is open to everyone until August 20. You can pledge to complete a distance of your choice in a location of your choosing (while physically distancing, of course)!
