The 2020 Arctic Winter Games is a True Sport Event!
(Ottawa, Ontario – November 21, 2019) – In recognition of the belief that good sport can make a great difference, the 2020 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) have been declared a True Sport event. This commitment will put the True Sport values and principles at the heart of this high profile Circumpolar sport competition for northern and Arctic athletes. The Games provide an opportunity to strengthen sport development in the participants’ jurisdictions, to promote the benefits of sport, to build partnerships and to promote culture and values.
Athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and spectators are encouraged to bring the True Sport Principles to life through their actions, thereby making a statement about the kind of sport they want to be a part of.
Event participants will have the opportunity to learn about values-based and principle-driven sport through several initiatives, including:
- Nomination of a True Sport athlete from each sport,
- Celebration of good sport moments on social media with #TrueSportMoments,
- Inclusion of True Sport branding within Games venues and publications.
“We are pleased to announce our partnership with True Sport and look forward to upholding the True Sport Principles at the 2020 Arctic Winter Games,” stated Moira Lassen, General Manager of AWG 2020. “Striving for excellence while playing fair, ensuring everyone is included, and keeping it fun are values that align very closely with our own vision. We will encourage everyone involved in the Games to embrace these values, in order to help deliver a strong and successful event.”
“We are very pleased that the 2020 Arctic Winter Games has demonstrated a commitment to values-based and principle-driven sport by making a True Sport Declaration,” said Karri Dawson, Senior Director, Quality Sport at the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport. “When sport is fair, inclusive, and fun, Canadians and their communities are able to reap the many benefits associated with a positive sport experience. Good luck to all the athletes who will be competing – we’ll be cheering you on as you pursue personal excellence.”
The 2020 Arctic Winter Games will run from March 15 to 21, 2020 in Whitehorse, Yukon.
