At the Halifax 2011 Canada Games, sharp shooter Ben Taylor will have his sight set on the gold medal.  As part of the Newfoundland and Labrador target shooting team, Ben looks forward to competing against Canada’s best, and putting his province on the map as one of the country’s top contenders.

Target shooting runs in the family for the St. John’s native. His father was a member of the Canada Games air rifle team in 1977 when the Games were hosted in his hometown.  Two and a half years ago, Ben decided to take to the shooting range and follow in his father’s footsteps.

Ben really enjoys the challenge of target shooting. It is a sport that requires patience, concentration, and there is always room for improvement. “There never seems to be an absolute best in this sport,” he explains. “There’s always something you can do to make yourself better and there’s always something you can do to pick up a couple extra points.”

When sport is clean and respectful, it has the ability to form lasting relationships amongst competitors. One of the things Ben is most excited about for the Canada Games is seeing old friends. “It’s a pretty small sport, so you end up meeting a lot of the same people at different competitions. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing a lot of my friends again.”

Despite the pressure that comes with competition, Ben really likes to just Keep It Fun. He describes his sport with a passionate enthusiasm that can only serve to increase its development and popularity in Canada. “A lot of people don’t know about it, but it’s really fun. Sometimes people are skeptical, but once they spend a little time at the range, they really end up enjoying themselves. I find it really relaxing.”

True Sport would like to congratulate Ben on his attitude toward good sport and wish him the best of success at the 2011 Canada Winter Games and in all his future endeavors.
