Badminton is a game that requires impeccable reflexes, speed and technique. These are all qualities that Coady Duncan, 21, has developed over the seven years he has been playing the sport. The time he has spent refining his skills on the court has earned him a spot on Team Northwest Territories.
Growing up in Hay River, Coady began playing badminton in grade nine. He displayed a natural talent for the sport and with practice began improving quickly. Since then he has competed in numerous events and tournaments, including the 2007 Western Canada Summer Games and the 2008 Arctic Winter Games.
Coady is dedicated to his sport and he really knows how to Go For It. Every time he picks up his racquet, he continues to improve and enjoys seeing his hard work pay off. “Badminton looks simple, but it’s one of the hardest things I’ve found to do,” he says. “It feels really good to succeed and do the shots you’ve been practicing for hours, especially in a game situation.”
Besides the benefits that training has on his game, Coady understands the importance of Staying Healthy. “Exercise is one of the most important things to me. Staying fit and keeping active promotes a healthy lifestyle which is something everybody needs.”
Team Northwest Territories’ badminton coach, Melanie Kornacki, is continually impressed with Coady’s positive work ethic and his commitment to Giving Back. “Coady is an excellent example of an athlete who embraces the Principles for Sport,” says coach Kornacki. “He is a big advocate for the sport of badminton. He helps at his local badminton club by coaching and training the children there. I wish I could have a team full of Coady Duncans. He is a great badminton player and one heck of a role model!”
True Sport wishes Coady the best of success at the 2011 Canada Winter Games, and in the future!
