Team NT Canada Games 2009: Katherine Elkin
Commitment, ambition and enthusiasm are well known characteristics of elite athletes.
Commitment, ambition and enthusiasm are well known characteristics of elite athletes. Yet these traits only begin to describe the True Sport Athlete from the Northwest Territories, Katherine Elkin. In the pool, Katherine has been winning medals in events such as the Alberta Senior Championships and Defi Sportif. She will be heading to the University of Calgary in the fall but before she represents the Calgary Dinos, Katherine is stepping onto the deck for Team Northwest Territories at the 2009 Canada Games.
Even though her focus remains in the pool, Katherine does not forget about the younger swimmers, her teammates or her community. Katherine Gives Back to her community by coaching young swimmers in her own club and volunteering to coach with the Northwest Territories Special Olympics Team. Outside of the pool, Katherine is also involved with local dance and performance organizations. True Sport is all about contributing to a positive sport environment and Katherine is devoted to helping both her teammates and her community become a healthy sport community.
Katherine competes under the designation of SWAD (swimmer with a disability). Yet no classification can slow her down. Katherine swims at practice and competitions with unparalleled enthusiasm and dedication. She is constantly encouraging and complimenting her teammates for their hard work in the pool. Her willingness to Go For It has undoubtedly rubbed off on her teammates. Katherine has emerged as a leader both in and out of the pool and is a living example of how much you can learn about yourself when you rise to the challenge. Despite her physical limitations, Katherine has shown that success can be achieved through commitment, ambition and enthusiasm.
The True Sport Movement wishes Katherine the best of success at the 2009 Canada Summer Games, and in the future!
