Team ON Canada Games 2009: Evert McLaughlin

Evert McLaughlin comes by his sailing talent honestly- his father was a silver-medalist in sailing at the 1984 Olympics.

Evert McLaughlin comes by his sailing talent honestly- his father was a silver-medalist in sailing at the 1984 Olympics. Evert himself has been sailing almost since he could walk. Not content to walk in the shadow of his father’s success however, Evert is steadily building a new McLaughlin legacy.

Evert began sailing at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club at the junior level. As he developed his skills he made the choice to join the Lake Ontario Optimist team in order to travel and race competitively. In 2003 he won the Optimist Canadian Championship and was named the Youth Sailor of the Year by Ontario Sailing. In 2008 Evert continued his medal success with a second place finish at the Canadian Yachting Association Laser Youth National Championships.

Evert’s aspirations demonstrate an athlete determined to Go For It. His goals include receiving Quest for Gold funding, a program established to provide additional support to athletes in Ontario and to increase the performance and number of Ontarians competing at the highest levels. Evert also aspires to make the Canadian Sailing team and to one day participate in the Olympics.

In addition to excelling in competition, Evert Gives Back by coaching young athletes. He does not forget the challenges of being a young sailor and is always there to lend a helping hand to developing athletes. A particularly touching story occurred at a small sailing regatta on Lake Ontario. With the onslaught of a severe storm Race Officials sent the sailors into shore. One young, inexperienced sailor had the elements get the best of him and Evert immediately navigated to the young man’s side. “I stopped to help a younger boy whose boat was flipped and was overwhelmed by the high winds and rain. I turned his boat upright, calmed him down, and waited until a safety boat had arrived. In this situation, I took a leadership role to help a fellow sailor in distress because I remember how scary dangerous conditions can be when I was young” recounts Evert.

The True Sport Movement would like to congratulate Evert on his commitment to Going For It and Giving Back and wishes him every success at the 2009 Canada Summer Games and in his future.
