If you’re planning on watching the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, you’ll want to keep an eye out for one of True Sport’s newest members – Almonte, Ontario’s cross-country skier Perianne Jones. While she’ll be proudly representing Canada, the SchoolBOX logo on her jersey will represent and help raise awareness for an important campaign – Ski 4 SchoolBOX.
The purpose of Ski 4 SchoolBOX is to help some of the world’s poorest children receive an education. Shortly after returning from the Olympics, Perianne and some of her teammates will travel to an impoverished community in Nicaragua, Central America, to build a school with SchoolBOX. In addition to their own fundraising efforts, they are reaching out to cross-country ski clubs across Canada to help raise funds to build a sports area for the school.
“In the spirit of Giving Back, we encourage True Sport members to support Perianne by taking part in this amazing project,” said Karri Dawson, Director of True Sport Operations. “We are very happy to see SchoolBOX continue to work towards its mission of making education possible.”
If you’re wondering what kind of impact SchoolBOX is really having, just ask one of the 2013 True Sport Give-Back Challenge winners, the West Ottawa Soccer Club. Last year, they raised over $15,000 and a group of six athletes from a U14 team spent nine days in Nicaragua helping build a school.
“The trip was a life changer, not only for those who directly experienced it, but for everyone who played a part in the journey,” said Dawson.
SchoolBOX is a registered Canadian Charity that helps over 15,000 children get primary education in Central America. Its community is united in love for the children they serve and the belief that education can defeat poverty.
True Sport is proud of Perianne for her Give Back efforts and wishes her best of luck in Sochi. Go for it!
