Tariff Relief Program

The Tariff Relief Program waives import taxes for sport goods imported by national and provincial sport organizations and athletes. The goods must be imported into Canada exclusively for the purpose of training for, or competing in, amateur competitions of international calibre. The True Sport Foundation is the certifying body for this program.

How does it work?

  1. Complete the form below (Tariff Remission Request Form) and attach the purchase order and purchase invoice.
    - Request must be completed by the internationally recognized national sport organization or multi-sport organization (e.g., Athletics Canada, Alpine Canada, Canada Games Council).
  2. The True Sport Foundation will review the application to ensure it meets the Tariff Relief Program requirements.
  3. If approved, the True Sport Foundation will issue a ‘Tariff Item Certificate’. The expiry date is six months from the issue date.
  4. The True Sport Foundation will invoice the requesting sport organization the appropriate total based on the value of goods and the outlined percentage ratio.
  5. The invoice and a copy of the certificate will be emailed to the requesting sport organization and the original copy of the certificate will be mailed.
  6. Please allow 5-10 business days for the True Sport Foundation to review applications and ensure all requirements are met.

Who can apply?

Tariff relief requests must be completed by the internationally recognized national sport organization or multi-sport organization (e.g., Athletics Canada, Alpine Canada, Canada Games Council).

What goods are eligible for tariff relief?

  • Goods that comply with the international competition standards applicable to the sport for which they are designed.
  • Goods that are required by an athlete exclusively for the purpose of training for or competing in an amateur competition of international calibre, including goods for testing athletes for doping control purposes.
  • Important: To qualify, goods cannot be sold or otherwise disposed of within two years of importation.

How much are import taxes on goods?

Import duty taxes can range from 7.5% to 23.1%. These taxes are applied on the value of goods imported from countries other than the United States.

Are there fees?

The True Sport Foundation charges an administration fee based on the Canadian value of imported goods as outlined here:

Value of Goods Percentage
$1 - $50,000 7%
$50,000 - $100,000 6%
Over $100,000 5%

Example: Rugby equipment valued at $25,000 CDN is being imported. The administration fee payable to the True Sport Foundation is $1,750 (7%).

What’s the benefit of this program?

You save money! If you qualify, the import duty taxes are waived and even with the administration fee, you save money!
