Winners of the True Sport Give-Back Challenge announced

(Ottawa, Ontario – December 1, 2014) – True Sport today confirmed the names of the three winners of the 2014 True Sport Give-Back Challenge, and the details of their entries, as selected through a public online voting process.

Canadians from coast to coast to coast had two days to submit their online votes for their favourite of the six finalists in this year’s challenge.

“We are One – Kickin’ it in the Community” by the Nepean City Soccer Club (NCSC) in Ottawa, Ontario, received 39 percent of the total votes and the top prize of $3,000. The NCSC submission displayed how a group of dedicated volunteers can come together and prove that good sport can make a great difference – especially when everyone is included.

“’We are One – Kickin’ it in the Community’ is an inspiring example of the power of community sport,” said Karri Dawson, Executive Director, True Sport Foundation. “Every year, we are moved by the amazing stories that come in from across the country. Creativity, enthusiasm, and the spirit of giving back and good sport were captured in all of the videos we received.”

“It’s Not a Game, It’s a Way of Life” by the Dog River Howlers Rugby Club from Regina, Saskatchewan, earned 27 per cent of the votes and the second place prize of $2,000. The Howlers are not new to giving back. Over the years, the club has used rugby as a vehicle to better their community and build bridges between people all around the world.

“OYCL True Sport Give Back” by the Ottawa Youth Curling League (OYCL) in Ottawa, Ontario, received 18 per cent of the votes and a prize of $1,000. The OYCL is Ottawa’s first youth curling league. It brings kids from various clubs in, and around, the city together to curl each week. Professional curlers gave back by stepping up as volunteer ambassadors; lending their voices to help promote the sport they love. The OYCL’s submission perfectly narrated each of the True Sport Principles.

Winners of the True Sport Give-Back Challenge were announced on CBC’s live broadcast of RBC Sports Day in Canada on November 29. RBC Sports Day in Canada is presented by ParticipACTION, CBC and True Sport.

True Sport would like to thank everyone who took part in the True Sport Give-Back Challenge and encourage all members to participate again next year. Details and guidelines will be made available at www.truesport.ca/giveback in the near future.
